Redeem your most unproductive hour

Backstep Forward Newsletter

A short, to-the-point, weekly newsletter.

One challenge to take a step back.

One idea to propel you forward.

This week is going to be short and sweet.

We all know it.  Our tasks, our work, just about anything we do, swells or contracts to fill the time we allot to it.

Backstep

Look at your work week.  This concept can be applied to all hours of your week, but let’s just start with your work hours.  Are you using all of those hours productively?  Are you sitting in your chair at 3 p.m., being practically unproductive?

Forward

Identify the least productive hour of your work week.  Eliminate it.  Go home to your wife and kids an hour early.  Go for a walk outside.  Call that friend you haven’t talked to in months.  Trust that you will get your essential work done in the time you have allotted to it.

Obviously, being self-employed gives you much more control over this than if you’re not.  Don’t give me those excuses, business owners.  You are not a slave to your employees or your customers.

If you’re not the owner of the business, you also have plenty of creative ways of making this happen.  If you’re salary and are working more hours than your contract states, simply begin pairing back to what you agreed to.  Another option is to turn an hour into a walking meeting or phone call.  I am in no way advocating not doing the good and productive work you agreed to. Simply find a way to turn your most unproductive hour into something worthwhile.

Look at your work week. Identify your most unproductive hour. Redeem it. Give that hour to someone or something you love instead. (Share this on Twitter)
