One of the best realizations I came to when I was thinking about selling my financial planning firm was, “If you really miss it, you can build it again, faster and better.”
As we near the beginning of a new year the thoughts of potentially pursuing new things often grow.
However, at the same time, one of the main things that often holds us back, and was holding me back, from moving on to something new is the fear of being unable to get back what we currently have if we don’t enjoy our new pursuit.
In my experience, this fear is almost always unfounded. From what I’ve seen, with colleagues and clients, if you’ve built something once, you most definitely can build it again, and likely far faster and far better.
Backstep
Are you considering a change? Career, business, living location, activities, etc. Is one of the things holding you back the fear that you may not be able to get back to where you currently are if you don’t like the change?
Forward
Think through how you could get back to where you are if don’t enjoy your new pursuit. Be creative, get outside input from wise friends.
Want to move? Maybe rent out your current house and rent in the new location for a year to be able to bounce back if you want to.
Want to change careers or business? Jot down a quick “plan B” outlining how you would rebuild your business or career in a better fashion than before.
Need to dial back or change your involvement in activities. Just do it. It’s so easy to add activities back into life in the future. Try to resist the “fear of missing out” and focus more on the “fact of missing out on something different” if you don’t make the change.
In most areas of life, you can rebuild your current situation if a change doesn’t pan out. Why not give it a try?!
