10x Slower

Backstep Forward

A short, to-the-point, regular thoughtletter.

One challenge to take a step back.

One idea to propel you forward.

“Going to the extreme, 10x-ing something, should not always be bigger and faster. It is just as important to know when to go extremely slow. 10x slower.” (Share this on Twitter)

In recent years, there has been a trend to use the terminology “10x” in various forms. 10x your productivity. 10x your health. 10x your income, your business, and the list goes on. Just look at two of the titles of bestselling books in recent years. The 10x Rule. 10x is Easier than 2x. And to be honest, I have read both of these books and received value from each. The aim of this 10x culture is that bigger and faster is better and even easier. It can be.

However, I am currently on a 10-week motorhome road trip with my wife and kids, and it has made me acutely aware that sometimes 10x slower is the answer. Just try getting twin 2-year-olds and a 7-year-old, all boys, out a motorhome door in the middle of a busy parking lot and through the gauntlet of a museum gift shop without losing your mind…or a kid. Yeah, try that at 10x.

There are many times, and not just with kids, when going to the extreme in the other direction and intentionally moving ten times slower is the right move. How else will we be sure not to speed past the most important events, opportunities, and people in our lives?

Backstep

What do you need to do 10x slower? What popped into your mind that you know you are rushing through too quickly? What are you missing out on? What is passing you by because you are moving too quickly?

Forward

Decide today to move exceptionally slow in something of high importance. 10x slower, not just a little slower. Listen longer, think deeper, and pay attention to the things you’ve been racing by.
